St. Christopher's Adult Respite Service was opened at Lamagh Newtownforbes in October 2003.
It is a ten bedroom home like facility which delivers a respite service to adults with varying degrees of Intellectually Disability. The unit is open on a twenty four hour basis, delivering overnight and day respite to approximately seventy service users.
Its staff skill mix consists of both nursing and care staff, and this team works in close collaboration with families and carers, which is an integral part in the effectiveness of this valuable service.
The respite service continues to evolve as a needs base service and the contribution of Parents and families are recognised as a significant factor in its ongoing development.
Aims of Respite
- Our aim is to provide a planned short-term break for parents and guardians who are fulltime carers of a person with an intellectual disability.
- We support families as far as possible through a crisis situation by providing crisis respite that best suits the needs of the family.
- We aim as far as possible to facilitate friends sharing respite breaks together, therefore supporting the development of friendships, promoting independence and social inclusion.
